Data Analysis Books

Using Microsoft Access for Data Analysis and Interrogation: This book was completed and published in March, 2002.  It combines the theory of Benford’s Law and several other data analysis tests with Microsoft Access in that the reader is shown the detailed steps needed (with screen shots) to run the tests.  The chapters each discuss one or more tests, give notes and hints on using the tests, include a challenge to power users, and show the detailed steps in Access to run the tests.  The first chapters set the stage for using Access in data analysis and discuss the logic and architecture of Access.  The book includes two test data sets so that the user can duplicate the screen shots and Excel templates that produce graphs to match those in the book.

Digital Analysis Using Benford's Law: This is my first book published in 2000.  The Preface discusses my journey from the discovery of Benford’s Law to recent successes.  Benford’s Law gives us the expected probabilities of the digits in tabulated data.  The digit patterns are counterintuitive with a large skewness in favor of the low digits.  For example, the digit 1 is expected as a first digit 30.1 percent of the time.  The book has a fairly in-depth review of Benford’s Law since auditors could apply these patterns to help establish the authenticity of corporate numbers.  The book reviews several other data analysis tests and includes a comprehensive case study, advanced applications, and a comprehensive bibliography on Benford’s Law.

This book is now out of print.  I plan to write a second edition in 2010.
